Who Worships a Child?

Manger 5

I’m about to have my first child. “A real boy!” as Pinocchio would say in his high-pitched Disney voice. By December 30th that real boy – my son Jacob – will no longer be hiding out in Kerry’s body; he will enter the world breathing real air, crying real hard, and growing real big as he begins down the road to manhood. His nine-month incubation has transformed him from incomplete swimming cells to a fully working human. All of that is awesome. Incredible. Mind-blowing even. But it doesn’t make him worthy of worship.

Each Christmas I wonder if those who first worshiped Jesus, a newly minted baby boy, could fully grasp just how special he was. He breathed real air, cried real hard, and had a long way to go before growing into a real man. Yet their trust in God’s promise gave them eyes to see that this child was far more than just another boy.

I hope that what you see this Christmas is not just a boy in a manger, but is God in the flesh. No child is worthy of worship unless he is the Lord of all Creation, come to earth to make a way for his beloved people to know his beloved Father. Then he’s worthy of our complete, unadulterated, uninhibited, and unapologetic worship. That is who Jesus was. That is who Jesus is.

I’m thankful to be on this journey with you. Join me this Christmas in worshiping the one true God who has loved us beyond our greatest need and called us to an adventure beyond our wildest imagination. True, humble, life-sacrificing worship will be the foundation for all God plans to do through you and me in 2016. And in him we will accomplish exceedingly and abundantly more than we could ever imagine. And I’m looking forward to it.

Merry Christmas,
Chris
